- An ‘Audio Mode’ feature appears to be coming to the ‘Live Translate’ function in the Google Translate app for Android, allowing users to select from three modes when using it with the Pixel Buds series or ‘Android XR’ smart glasses: ‘Conversation,’ ‘Listening,’ and ‘Silent.’
- An analysis of the in-app code from the v9.27 update for the Google Translate Android app revealed the addition of strings related to the new ‘Audio Mode.’
- The three modes are: ‘Conversation’ for a typical dialogue between the user and another person, ‘Listening’ to understand a conversation between two other people as a third party, and ‘Silent’ where translations are displayed as text on the Android device without audio playback.
The “Live Translate” feature, implemented in the Android app for the “Google Translate” service, automatically translates conversations between two languages, enabling communication between speakers of different languages.
The “Live Translate” feature can also be used through the Google Pixel Bluetooth earbuds, the “Pixel Buds” series, and its use with “Android XR” smart glasses will soon be enabled.

It appears this “Live Translate” feature will be getting an “Audio Mode,” allowing users to select from three modes—’Conversation,’ ‘Listening,’ and ‘Silent’—when using it with the Pixel Buds series or “Android XR” smart glasses. An analysis of the in-app code from the v9.27 update of the Google Translate app for Android, released on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, revealed the addition of strings related to this new ‘Audio Mode’ feature.

With the ‘Audio Mode’ being implemented in ‘Live Translate’ for the Google Translate Android app, three modes will be available: ‘Conversation’ for a typical dialogue between the user and another person; ‘Listening’ to understand a conversation between two other people as a third party; and ‘Silent,’ where translations are displayed as text on the Android device without being spoken aloud. This makes perfect sense.
It is not yet clear when ‘Audio Mode’ will be introduced to ‘Live Translate’ in the Google Translate app for Android, but it will likely be rolled out as soon as it is ready.
