- The official release of digital student and employee IDs for the Google Wallet app in Japan may be coming soon.
- Analysis of the in-app code for the Android version of the “Google Wallet” app, distributed between late 2025 and early 2026, confirmed additions that appear to be groundwork for this feature.
- Additionally, we have confirmed the inclusion of Japanese resource codes for “Pass Verification,” a new security feature expected to be used for adding high-security cards, such as digital student and employee IDs, to Google Wallet.
The “Google Wallet” app, Google’s mobile wallet management application, has implemented student ID functions and employee ID functions, allowing it to be used for digital student and employee identification.
However, this is currently geared toward overseas markets and has not been fully rolled out in Japan. Yet, digital student and employee IDs for the “Google Wallet” app may soon be officially released in Japan. Analysis of the in-app code for the Android version of “Google Wallet” distributed from late 2025 to early 2026 has confirmed additions that appear to be preparations for this move.
Specifically, Japanese resource codes related to student and employee IDs have been identified within the Android “Google Wallet” app code.
- Student ID (v25.45 or later)
<string name="add_student_id_card_title">学生証</string>
<string name="id_card_student_id_visible_name">学生証</string>
- Employee ID (v25.1 or later)
<string name="add_corporate_id_card_title">社内 ID</string>
<string name="id_card_corporate_id_visible_name">社内 ID</string>
Furthermore, in the recent app version v26.2, we confirmed the inclusion of Japanese resource codes for “Pass Verification,” which is expected to be a new security feature for adding high-security cards like digital student and employee IDs to “Google Wallet.” This feature also relates to the “My Number Card (My Number Card on Android)” function, which has been confirmed to be included since app version v25.1 or later.
This is a security flow where users enter a verification code sent via email or SMS when registering digital student IDs, employee IDs, or “My Number Cards” to the Android “Google Wallet” app. Previously, only English resource codes existed, but we have confirmed that Japanese resource files were added in app version v26.2.
<string name="pass_verification_screen_title">パスの確認</string>
<string name="pass_verification_screen_description">%1$s宛てに送信された確認コードを入力してください</string>
<string name="pass_verification_screen_code_input_label">確認コード</string>
<string name="pass_verification_screen_code_input_helper_text">コードが届かない場合は、数分待ってからもう一度お試しください</string>
<string name="pass_verification_screen_resend_code_button">コードを再送</string>
<string name="pass_verification_screen_resend_code_success_message">コードを再送しました</string>
<string name="pass_verification_screen_resend_code_error_message">コードを再送できませんでした。後ほどもう一度お試しください。</string>
<string name="pass_verification_screen_submit_button">送信</string>
<string name="pass_verification_screen_verify_later_button">後で確認する</string>
In other words, security features tailored for Japan to register digital student IDs, employee IDs, and “My Number Cards (My Number Card on Android)” have begun implementation in the Android “Google Wallet” app. While the “My Number Card (My Number Card on Android)” is scheduled for official rollout in Autumn 2026, there is a possibility that digital student and employee IDs for the Android “Google Wallet” app will be released in Japan at the same time or even earlier.
