Google Calendar for Android Adds Support for iCalendar (.ics) File Imports

  • The feature to import calendar data from iCalendar files appears to have been implemented in the Android Google Calendar app update v2025.41.1-820176971-release, rolled out around Tuesday, October 21, 2025.
  • Analysis of the in-app code has revealed the addition of related strings.
  • The feature works by displaying a dialog to import calendar data into Google Calendar when an iCalendar file is opened from a file manager. The import is executed upon granting permission.

Until now, the feature for importing calendar data in the iCalendar file (.ics) format was only supported by the desktop version of Google Calendar.

However, it appears that the iCalendar file import feature has been implemented in the Android Google Calendar app with the v2025.41.1-820176971-release update, distributed around Tuesday, October 21, 2025. An analysis of the app’s code revealed the addition of related strings.

<string name="ical_import_all_success">All events added to your calendar.</string>
    <string name="ical_import_failed">Failed to add event.</string>
    <string name="ical_import_some_success">Some events added to your calendar.</string>
    <string name="ical_import_succeeded_unnamed_calendar_all_events">%d events added</string>
    <string name="ical_import_succeeded_unnamed_calendar_some_events">Added %1$d of %2$d events</string>
    <string name="ical_import_succeeded_with_calendar_name_all_events">%d events added to %s</string>
    <string name="ical_import_succeeded_with_calendar_name_some_events">Added %1$d of %2$d events to %s</string>
    <string name="ical_import_title">Add events?</string>
    <string name="ical_import_unsupported_file_format">Can’t add events. File format isn’t supported.</string>

The iCalendar file import feature in the Android Google Calendar app works by displaying a dialog box asking whether to import the calendar data into Google Calendar when an iCalendar file is opened from a file manager or a similar app. The import is then executed if permission is granted. While it might not have been a highly requested feature, there’s no doubt that it improves convenience.
