On Monday, September 29, 2025, Google announced the regional expansion of its “Scam Detection” feature, which is available in some regions for the “Phone by Google” app, the default phone app on Google Pixel devices.

“Scam Detection” in the “Phone by Google” app is a feature for Google Pixel devices from the “Pixel 9” onwards. It uses Google AI “Gemini Nano” to detect text patterns in conversations related to scams and provides real-time notifications. While “Scam Detection” was previously available in the English-speaking US, an expansion to Australia, Canada, the UK, Ireland, and India was recently announced.

Based on our own investigation, we discovered new Japanese localization for “Scam Detection” related features within the in-app code of the “Phone by Google” app update v194.0.813798200-publicbeta-pixel, released on Thursday, October 2, 2025.

Although “Scam Detection” in the “Phone by Google” app is not yet available in Japan or in Japanese, the new localization of related feature descriptions strongly suggests an imminent launch.

Incidentally, we also recently confirmed that new Japan-specific descriptions for the “Message scam detection” (Scam Detection / Message scams) feature have been added to the “Google Messages” app. This means it’s possible that “Message scam detection” in “Google Messages” and “Scam Detection” in the “Phone by Google” app could be launched in Japan simultaneously soon.
