The Android version of Google’s keyboard service, “Gboard,” recently rolled out AI-powered writing assistance tools, making text creation even more effortless.
However, Google appears to have plans beyond just these “writing assistance tools.” Our independent investigation has uncovered references to a new generative AI voice editing feature called “SmartEdit” within the app code of the Android version of “Gboard.” These references were found in app version v16.0.4.804347959-beta-arm64-v8a, which was released around September 23, 2025 (Tuesday).
The new generative AI voice editing feature for the Android version of “Gboard,” dubbed “SmartEdit,” seems to enable users to easily add, delete, or replace words in their typed text using only their voice. Specifically, it appears that voice editing commands and the edited text will be sent to Google servers, where the text will be temporarily processed and then returned.
This indicates that “SmartEdit” will be an online feature, rather than an on-device feature that utilizes models like Google AI’s “Gemini Nano.”
